The article ’When Democracy Failed: The Warnings of History’ reveals the essential role of ordinary people in the formation and directing of democracy which leads us to freedom.

At the beginning of terrorist attacks, German people were quite confused and thus made a mistake by passing support to a wrong leader. Hitler’s actions were aimed at capturing political power in Germany, leaving workers without any constitutional rights as he wished his holdouts silent forever. Actually he was not restoring the country after 1933 crisis, he only pursued his goal to rule over Germany.

Only in 1948 after implementing of Marshall Plan Germany realized that counting on the richest individuals does not always yield the expected results, and the Government was in danger of discontent outbreak in the heart of the country.

On the other hand, Roosevelt took all due measures for national development. The middle class was supported by law and motivated to work constantly for better results. As we know, the private initiative implies a free society with the USA being the vivid example of it.

Also, a few important steps were provided with the Bank Act of 1935 and creation of Exchange Commissions which regulated the stock market. Because of these measures the stock market and money circulation became more stable and organized. That is how Roosevelt’s economic policy persuaded people to spend their money on business to recover from the economic depression.

In my opinion, empowerment of corporations allows them to mercilessly exploit the workers and the middle class, which leads nowhere. This is why we should always remember the experience of the Great Depression years and keep in mind that hard work is the reason why we are still the free people who take pride in being called Americans.
